Beijing’s CCTV Building Burned Down

with 3 comments

CCTV Building
Back in August of last year I took the above photos. My sister just sent me a link to a New York Times article reporting that the Rem Koolhaas designed building has burned down. No reports on any injuries or deaths (here’s hoping), but I have to say this is just awful. ‘The Pants’ was easily one of my favorite buildings in the world & to me it represented so many things about the future of Beijing. I loved how it was not only a very unique modern design, but also because it was ultimately a silly design. I like silliness.

UPDATE: The NYTimes is saying the blaze was started due to illegal fireworks. One firefighter died and six others were injured.

Of all of the new buildings to come up the new CCTV corporate hq is my favorite.  Designed by Rem Koolhaas it is still not done, but should be in December or early 2009.  Nicknamed The Big Shorts (I call it The Pants) it also serves as a reasonable landmark to where my parents live.
